The essence of tango

The essence of tango for me lies in its simplicity and subtlety. For tango is a communication, a communication between you and the person you tango with, between you (the dancer) and the composer, between your mind and your body, between your body and the floor, etc. Communication requires one to hear. To hear, one must quiet himself; one must humble and pure his heart. Only afterwards one can move with mutual confidence, energy and preciseness Can you see the beauty, can you hear it, can you smell it, can you feel it, can you taste it?

Argentine Tango and Health Benefits

A study conducted by the Society of Neuroscience says, dancing not only keeps the body in shape, but helps sharpen the brain by improving memory skills. The New England Journal of Medicine found dancing at least 3 times a week boosts brain power. Argentine Tango helps prevent neurological disorders (Scientific American, July 2008). It has been linked to increase heart health and improve social skills.Studies made at Washington University found dancing Tango improves balance more than any other exercise.Roberto Piedro, a pioneer researcher of the therapeutic benefits and applications of tango emphasizes "Tango is more beneficial than other traditional exercises and dances".

Frederico Trosseco, a psychiatrist and author of the book "Tango Terepia" suggests and utilizes tango workshops as a treatment for depression, social phobias and schizophrenia. Dr. Trossero started to investigate the clinical application of tango when he noticed that his friends, who danced, felt much better after the “Milongas” , where also their headaches disappeared. “Tango itself is a therapy”Karen Woody, author of "Dance Your Feelings" believes that tango whilst having benefits on coordination and memory, for many people, also has the capacity to awaken the "feeling body" which in itself is a great signal of health and well being.A su salud!Aclamaciones al tango!

Notes of a Vals workshop

“Milonga, we dance on the rhythm; valse, we dance on the melody.”

“You’re (follower) like the water in the glass, I’m (leader) the glass.”

About Walking

“Make the follower walks on the beat, your (leader) step is just the consequence of that move.”

“Enjoy the axis! As if you step on one spot and you don’t want to go away.”
Notes of a Vals workshop and a private lesson with Julio y Corina in Hong Kong, October 2005

The quality of a great follower

The quality of a great follower, putting aside all the technical issues:
- She is ready to follow things she doesn’t know, and sometimes even a mistake.- She is ready to make mistakes, and she doesn’t feel bad about it.- When she dances, she doesn’t think. She doesn’t think about how she dances, how she looks, or whether this is a right or wrong step.- She follows with her full heart, but at the same time expressing herself by the way she walks, the way she moves etc.- She is inspired by the music, her embellishment and the way she moves are what she hears.- She completely surrenders herself to the dance and the music, she lets her mind and spirit go so that nothing will bother her when she dances.- She never thinks she’s subordinate to the leader. She knows that in tango, a dance is 50:50.- She is confident about herself, so much so that she doesn’t worry about how other people think about her dance.
In conclusion, it’s all about free of prejudges, having self-confidence and having sense of musicality.

Tango is a language of emotions

The process by which a man would learn to dance was similar to the way a child learns a language. First of all the child listens. Then, after perhaps nine months the child starts to make little noises, imitating the sound of words spoken by the adults around it. But mostly it still listens. Gradually it starts to make words, and then phrases and sentences, until by the age of three a child can have a proper conversation. There is still some way to go, of course, but the fundamentals are there, and a child who learns in this way doesn't make grammatical mistakes as an adult. The child may grow up to be a poet or someone inarticulate, but whatever use it makes of the language it learns, the fundamentals are always right.

Open Letter from Tete to Tango Dancers Around the World
>
> Buenos Aires, December 01, 2008
>
> On the National Day of Tango December 11 I would like to address
myself with
> all due respect and affection to those around the world who have in
some way
> or other learned to love tango as much as we do. I would like you
to dance
> better, for your own satisfaction but within the music that is so
> passionate.
>
> The tango is a feeling. It is not difficult to learn. Nor is it
easy. But
> it is not danced by figures and steps. It is danced to the music.
I know
> of no dancer anywhere in the world who dances without music. You
cannot be
> mistaken for so long. Dancing without music, you will never learn
tango.
>
> You choose your teachers and invite those from whom you want to
learn. You
> deal with the issues of tango from another point of view, and I'm
going to
> tell you why. Because tango is and always will be music and
learning how to
> walk it, to listen to it, to feel it=85because it becomes a part of
you that
> you cannot detach. After that, each person, each dancer learns his
or her
> own style. Men and women.
>
> Enough of lies. Don't buy repetitive forms. If you want to buy
tango, buy
> tango.
>
> Why don't you enjoy the milongas of Buenos Aires much? Because the
> milongueros and milongueras really dance. They were the ones who
taught the
> current generation how to dance.
>
> However, the path you are on seems to be another, one with a different
> tango, a tango in disguise. For the sake of tango, and for the
sake of all
> of us and with my heart in my hand I say to you: Dance the music.
Because
> the music is the tango.
>
> I take my leave of you with much love.
> Dance well, have a good journey,
> My companion and I,
